CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
1.1. Problem Background
The statement about the aims of teaching is very commonly defined in terms of four skills there are listening, speaking, reading and writing. Listening is an activity that is inspirable part in teaching learning process. In order to develop students' listening ability, the teacher should concern with all factors involved in it, such as the teaching methods, classroom management, the materials and the equipment that influence in the ability of the goal's of teaching learning process. Listening is not a simple thing. It involves brainstorming. Listening is one of the important and fundamental of the four skills in language learning. Emmertin Raroz (2011:2) said that Listening is an active process by which students receive, construct meaning form, and respond to spoken form. In Listening classes, students are usually given practice in listening but they are not actually taught listening. They just getting exercises without learning how to sharp their ears so they can do the listening practise well. Listening and speaking are often taught
together, but beginners,especially non literate ones,should be given more listening than speaking practice.
In communication, listening takes a major role to play in the learning of English. It provides the learners information from which to build up knowledge necessary for using the language. When this knowledge is built up, learners can begin to speak and read. So students can communicate by using a language. Since listening is inspirable part of communication skills the teachers should give listening a place in language teaching in the varieties of conversational situation and increase the student's awareness of the features of spoken language.The students who are studying English automatically also learn about listening linguist, because it is imposible to study a new language without listening the sound system of language. So, listening ability is the most important and fundamental in language learning.
In English learning procces, when students have listened English languange, they will have passive vocabularies in their mind. It automatically saved by listening English languange as many as possible. Then, The next process is speak up or using the vocabularies in speaking activity. Speaking is one of four skills which is learned in the English curriculum. It is a procces of communication between speaker and listener. It means that the speakers expresses her or his ideas of thingking skills or ability in conversation or in speaking ability to listener. Speaking also as one of the four skills which has important role in daily life. Lade in Nuramalia (2010:3) states that speaking is describes as an ability to report acts or to express a sequence of ideas fluently. It means that speaking is important ability which should be mastered in English. Lien in Nurmalia(2010:2) states that speaking can be considered as the second skill should be gained after mastering listening skill. It means that speaking is belong to important part in languange. Harmer in Santoso (2011:2) said that speakers have great range of expressive possibilities at their command. A part from the actual world they use intonation and stress, which helps them to show which part of their speaking is more important. From the statement above, the researcher assumes that to improve students speaking ability: the students need practice their speaking. Without practices, the students cannot speak fluently. Rivers in Santoso (2011:2) states that it will more effective to produce utterances based on the basic structure which they have known. When the students understand the structure, they will be able to construct new utterances. Speaking is a manifestation learning of language, because usually someone who is learning language hopes to be able to speak by using the language which is learnt. The competence of speaking can indicate another competence of language skills, but it does not mean all the language skills are observable, at least one of them that is speaking.
Both of listening and speaking skills are important things which determine speaking performance. So, we can conclude that speaking in learning English is important. Therefore, the Senior High School students should be trained in speaking, because the students who are studying science and technology must be able to communicate at least in simple way. But in this case the senior high school students should get difficult for speaking as fluently as native speaker. The English teachersin senior high school sometimes complain that their students get difficulty in speaking. They often get trouble to express their idea and usually they lack language. Usually, a person who has performance in speaking is also supported by his/her listening ability, because speaking is a process of communication between speaker and listener.
Based on the observation, it was found that students’ speaking ability still low, so the researcher takes the title about correlation listening ability and their speaking performanceTherefore, the researcher is interested to conduct a research under a title, based on the survey of the research above, the research identified the problem of the research as follow : the speaking ability of the tenth grade student of SMA N 03 Metro is not optimal and the listening ability is low and then the speaking performance still low.
1.2. Problem Identification
Based on the background of the problem above, the researcher would like to identify the problem of the research as follow:
1.2.1 Students do not have many exposure of listening ability.
1.2.2 Many students do not understand what teacher says
1.2.3 Students do not have many exposure of speaking performance.
1.2.4 Students speaking performance has not been optimal yet.
1.2.5 It is difficult for them to pronounce the English word well
1.2.6 The traditional teaching like using hand book fully in listening activity not make some additonal in students’ listening achievement.
1.3. Problem Limitation
Based on the identification of the problem above, the researcher would like to focus this research on the correlation between students’ listening ability and their speaking performance
1.4. Problem Formulation
Having taken notice from the background above, the researcher starts the problem as follows:
1.4.1 Is there any correlation between students’ listening ability and their speaking performance ?
1.4.2 Is there any significant correlation between students’ listening ability and their speaking performance ?
1.5 Research Objective
The objectives of the research as below :
1.5.1 To know whether there is correlation between students’ listening ability and their speaking performance
1.5.2 To find out whether there is a significant correlation between students’ listening ability and their speaking performance
1.6. Research Scope
The scopes of the research are:
1.6.1 The characteristic of the research is quantitative research, as the correlation between students’ listening ability and their speaking performance
1.6.2 The subject of the research are students class XSMA N 03 Metro.
1.6.3 The object of this research is students' listening ability and their speaking performance
1.6.4 The place of this research is class X SMA N 03 Metro.
1.6.5 The time research will be conducted in 2011/2012
1.7. Research Benefit
The benefit of this research are:
1.7.1 For the researcher and the other researcher :
By this research, the researcher directly knows about the correlations between students’ listening ability and their speaking performance And for the other researcher hopefully this research will contribute the information material to other researchers who want to do research in other populations who have the similar research characteristic.
1.7.2 For the students:
The students can minimize their problems in speaking performance with some additional in listening ability.
1.7.3 For the English teacher:
1.6.6 Having speaking ability and understanding in listening is the one of the difficult material for students. So, there are many correlation in the students listening application. It means that the teacher must use the good method in teaching in order to make the students not bored in learning English and they should give the problem solving. It is hoped that this research can be used as information to the English teacher about the correlation between students’ listening ability and their speaking performance; and speaking performance will be effectively and running well with the strategies which the teacher use in listening activity
